Biking Towards Sustainability: A Greener Future with THE LOOP

Dubai, known for its impressive skyscrapers, luxurious shopping centers, and bustling business districts, is taking a big step towards a greener future with THE LOOP.

This planned cyclist highway aims to make Dubai the most connected city on earth by foot or bike, and it's sure to get residents out of their cars and onto two wheels. And it's not just good for your health – it's good for the environment, too.

Did you know that cars are a major contributor to air pollution? In fact, according to a study by the World Health Organization, outdoor air pollution causes 4.2 million deaths each year. That's why it's so important to encourage people to use healthier modes of transportation, like bikes. And that's exactly what Dubai is doing with THE LOOP. By providing a safe, convenient, and scenic route for cyclists, Dubai is taking a big step towards reducing air pollution and creating a more sustainable city.

By encouraging people to bike instead of drive, the city can reduce emissions and become a leader in sustainability. The proposed 93-kilometer-long structure would be enclosed in a glazed tube and equipped with a kinetic floor that can generate energy from human footfalls. Conceptual designs of THE LOOP, unveiled by the studio, reveal the inclusion of greenery and water features within the serpentine-like structure, which would be temperature-controlled.

THE LOOP project is masterminded by URB, a global leader in developing sustainable cities. CEO, Baharash Bagherian explains how THE LOOP provided a great opportunity to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in urban mobility:

“In Europe most people ride bicycles or walk to get to work. In Dubai, our aim is to get more than 80% of people to use a bike on a daily basis. It will provide an enjoyable climate-controlled all-year environment, to make walking and cycling the primary mode of transport for Dubai's residents, in line with its new 20-minute city initiative. Urb aims to develop the first active mobility infrastructure of its kind anywhere in the world, with various amenities and sustainability features that will shape the future of urban mobility in Dubai and beyond, Whilst cities race to upgrade their infrastructure towards more sustainable modes of transport, THE LOOP project in Dubai aims to create a new benchmark for the world's smartest cycling and walking infrastructure."

A few key takeaway points on this new exciting initiative:

  • Zero emissions transport system

  • 93 km
  • 100% renewable energy using kinetic power

  • 100% recycled water for irrigation

  • Additional amenities for residents

  • Promotes health & wellbeing

  • Vertical farms for food security
