June is Pride month around the world. June was chosen following the June 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York which followed what was believed to be an unjust police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a popular meeting place for the LGBTQ+ community. The protests which followed this police raid focused on championing for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community demanded safe places where they could come together without fear of discrimination.
Pride month is about more than just celebratory events. It is also a time to educate others, to learn from others, to continue the fight for LGBTQ+ rights across the world, and to continue the wider fight and push for equality for all.
This year many events in the UK have been postponed to later in the summer - with the main pride parade in London to be postponed until the 11th September 2021. This year's parade route will go through central London, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. Visibility, Unity and Equality are the themes of this year's event. For more details on the parade and other events in London visit here.
There are however still plenty of pride events over the course of the month in London.
One of the biggest events will be the Pride at the Palace concert to be held on the 7th of June at the Palace Theatre. The event will be held in aid of the Terence Higgins Trust and will see LGBTQ+ stars from the West End take to the stage in what is expected to be a concert of epic proportions.
The city will also host plenty of themed brunches taking place throughout the month on Saturdays. These will be at Bar Salsa in Soho, as well as the Bougie Drag and Go Gaga brunches in Temple.
The 26th of June will see London Trans+ Pride, from 2pm in Wellington Arch.
Due to COVID restrictions there will also be a wealth of online events for London Pride this year. Including talks and workshops led by The Queer Parenting Partnership, and an Incite Pride Poetry Special. For the full run down of events visit Pride online.
