Cheers to Beers this June 15th

Beer and Britain go together like ham and cheese, Tom and Jerry, and salt and pepper. It’s an undeniably great match. Learn more about the origins of Beer Day Britain and how you can celebrate this year.

Brewers, pubs, beer retailers and beer drinkers are making plans to celebrate this iconic day on June 15th. Why June 15th you may ask, well this was the date that Magna Carta was sealed back in 1215. Ale is mentioned in clause 35: “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn, namely the London quarter.”. Having the Magna Carta connection with Beer Day Britain makes people appreciate that for centuries ale has played a central role in Britain.

Beer Day Britain is still a fairly new celebration as it was launched in 2015 by Jane Peyton, an award-winning beer sommelier, drinks educator, broadcaster, and writer. Jane put it perfectly when she said “We have so much to be proud of with Britain’s vibrant brewing heritage and current brewing scene and the fact that our pubs are a cornerstone of the social life of the nation. Without beer, pubs would be wine bars. Now we have an official day to celebrate beer in Britain so please join us for a national party so we can make Beer Day Britain the best beer fiesta in the world!”

How can you celebrate

In past years celebrations have taken the form of brewers having brewed celebration beers with British hops, pubs have hosted special events including beer festivals, and cheers to beers singalong competitions, and beer retailers have sold Best of British Beer selection boxes.

If you’re feeling brave you could always attempt to brew your own beer to celebrate this auspicious day. As this blog states, if you can make mac and cheese from a box without help, you can make this simple beer recipe. However, you do require quite a few items. If gathering all of them sounds like too much work, there are beer making kits available that have everything you need to brew your own beer, all in one box.

Tradition has it that at 7 pm on Beer Day Britain, the nation raises a glass and says ‘Cheers To Beer’, then posts a social media message using the hashtag #CheersToBeer. Each year this hashtag trends throughout the day and evening. You can also sing along to the Cheers to Beer anthem, written by Jane Peyton and Catherine Houghton, because as they stated, ‘Singing is good for the health and singing in company is even better for mental and physical health!’.

At Vonder, we never miss an opportunity to spoil our tenants. On the 15th join us for our special Cheers to Beers event at Wembley. Details will be shared on the app.

Beer may be just another alcoholic drink to the rest of the world, but not to the Brits. It is Britain's national drink, and now is the perfect opportunity to celebrate Britain's amazing brewing scene and heritage.

As the 16th century Swiss Physician Paracelus once said “Cerevisia malorum. divina medicina”  meaning “A little bit of beer is divine medicine”. So now's the time to get out to your local pub, order and ice cold beer and share it with friends.
