Veganuary 2023

In a nutshell, Veganuary is a nonprofit organisation that runs an annual challenge that promotes and educates about veganism by encouraging people to follow a vegan lifestyle for the month of January.

If you like challenging yourself and the way you eat, then Veganuary may be right up your alley. This annual, month-long event encourages people to cut out all meat, fish and dairy products and experience a vegan lifestyle. Why? Because Veganuary strives to inspire and support people to try veganism, drive corporate change, and create a global mass movement championing compassionate food choices with the aim of ending animal farming, protecting the planet, and improving human health.

This movement has gone from strength to strength since its first year in 2014. Last year 629 000 people signed up to take part from 228 countries around the world! That’s impressive numbers! And amazingly more than 1,540 new vegan products and menus were launched for Veganuary 2022! This shows this movement is making waves and has really grown in popularity worldwide.

There are thousands of amazing vegan recipes and establishments out there. Experimenting with flavours and ingredients that you may not usually grab when making a traditional meat meal will help to inspire you to explore this lifestyle further. It is clear the world has started to embrace veganism with Daniel Humm's New York restaurant Eleven Madison Park being the first vegan restaurant to be awarded not one but three Michelin stars! An amazing achievement for any restaurant, but how much more so for a restaurant that has cut down on their options of ingredients to work with. It would seem Veganuary’s vision of an all vegan world may be closer than we think,

Ultimately the reason for choosing veganism is to experience a healthier lifestyle, and to promote animal rights. It is also a potent way to shrink our environmental footprint, especially in regard to climate change. Conservative estimates show that animal agriculture is responsible for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions—more than planes, trains, and motor vehicles combined. It’s interesting to note that if you choose to give veganism a try for January only, or you decide to adopt it as a lifestyle choice, whether for your health, the environment, or the animals, you’ll be creating an impact that extends far beyond yourself.
