Celebrating the Christmas Season in Warsaw

Warsaw knows how to celebrate Christmas. At this time of year, the streets are decorated with fairy-tale figures, and at night they shine with thousands of lights.

We recommend taking a walk along the Royal Route in particular in order to see for yourself how beautiful the city becomes. From special exhibits to folk concerts and Christmas markets, there’s always something going on in the city. Decide exactly how you want to celebrate the season with this list of our top choices for events in Warsaw in December 2021.

Outdoor Christmas Market in the Old Town

The Rynek Christmas market is located opposite the Royal Castle and is open every day until the 6th of January, having opened at the end of November. Listen to Christmas carols and go shopping for handmade items from the stands, from hand-decorated baubles to woolen sweaters. Enjoy traditional Polish food like pierogis, fried fish, rich soups, and grilled meat, plus Christmas classics like mulled wine or hot chocolate that will warm you up in the cold weather. Take in the sight of the Christmas tree, decorated with thousands of lights. When you’ve finished shopping for the holidays, we recommend you go to the Old Town’s ice rink nearby, where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of ice skating. If you don’t have time that day, you can also check out the ice skating rinks at the Palace of Culture and Science and in every district.

  The Christmas Market is free and open every day. The hours on Sunday-Thursday are: 11 am – 8 pm. On Friday-Saturday: 11 am – 9:30. On December 25, 26, 31: 11 am – 9:30 pm,. On January 1: 11 am – 9:30 pm.

Christmas Folk Concert and Dance Show by Mazowsze

Mazowsze is the oldest and biggest Polish folk dancing and singing group, and they perform a Christmas concert every year at Mazowsze’s Performance Hall. The concert programme enhances the Christmas spirit with beautiful Polish Christmas music. In many carols, you can hear the rhythm of Polish dances (the oberek, mazur, or polonaise). There are also incredible choreographed routines performed in original costumes from all over Poland. See them for yourself from December 9-12 or December 14-19. Book your tickets online here

Royal Garden of Lights in Wilanów

It’s best to see one of the most beautiful gardens in Poland after dark this time of year. From the 9th of October, 2021, to the 27th of February, 2022, thousands of lights transform the garden into an illuminated wonderland with spectacular sights to see. A 75-metre tunnel to the Palace courtyard is lit up every year to classical music, as well as orange trees, a carousel, and other gardens. This year, there’s also an additional treat - the Rose Garden will be lit up too for the first time at the beginning of December. There are also special shows set to classical music. To visit the court of King Jan III, visit the Royal Garden on Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday. There you’ll find a 3D display of light, video, and sound beamed onto the palace which beautifully displays history from hundreds of years ago.
