Christmas shopping is so much better when you are surrounded by the festive atmosphere of a great Christmas market. Nothing can beat the feeling of supporting local vendors while finding that perfect, unique piece for your loved ones. The food, entertainment, and beautiful decor is all just a bonus! Luckily, London, Berlin, Warsaw, and Dubai all have incredible Christmas markets to explore. Every year, throughout November and December, these cities go all out.
Here’s our breakdown of the top Christmas markets around the world in 2022:
If you stay within our co living London apartments, you’re in luck because London has so much to offer in the realm of Christmas markets, in fact it’s hard for us to choose our favourites. Strolling around the city, you are sure to find more than one market you love. On top of the beautiful handmade crafts, you also get to taste the best foods and soak in all that holiday season cheer.
The top market on our list is Christmas By the River, open from November 16 - January 2, 2023. Stretching from the old City Hall all the way to London Bridge, this market feels as though it never ends - in the best way possible. Offering beautifully scenic views over the river Thames, a variety of workshops and events, and winter cabins with over 60 traders selling street food and handmade craft items, this market truly has got it all. And it’s centrally located, too!
Southbank Centre Winter Market is another marvellous option, with a wide variety of indulgent street food from its traditional alpine-style chalets. Surround yourself with twinkling lights and enjoy the shows and exhibitions for the whole family. On top of that, you can take part in wonderful free events, from a Caribbean carnival to free dancing extravaganzas and art sessions. Open from December 11th to January 8th, 2023.
Another of our personal favourites, Christmas in Leicester Square is a German-style market that offers more than just plenty of stalls with the best of Christmas food. They also feature a Spiegeltent that will play host to different performances, from Olivier Award-winning variety show “La Clique” to “Dance Like Gatsby”. But even if you don’t have a show ticket, festive food, drink stalls, and a traditional Christmas market will be open to all. This year, Leicester Square Christmas Market takes place from November 9th - January 8th, 2023.
For many people, Christmas markets are the biggest draw to Berlin in December. This makes sense, considering there are over one hundred markets this year! These markets are known for selling anything you need for a European Christmas experience, but some offer a lot more than just food and drink.
The Christmas market at Berlin City Hall will be one of your favourite spots this season. With the famous ferris wheel in front of the Governing Mayor's seat, street artists and musicians, and a snowy fairytale forest, you’ll be dazzled by your experience here. There are even performers who portray events that happened in Berlin’s Town Hall one hundred years ago. Just to add to the fun, Santa Claus visits here three times a day on his sleigh, and he’s happy to pose for photographs and give out hugs. Open from November 21st - December 30th, 2022, you’ll have plenty of time to experience the joy of this Christmas market.
Make sure to also check out Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market, which sells crafts like handmade candles and toys. Every year, this market attracts around 800,000 visitors. You’ll soon see why for yourself, as you enjoy the market’s varied entertainment programme, with jugglers, fire-eaters, and choirs. Open from November 21st - December 31st, 2022. Important to note: due to construction work, this market will be held at nearby Bebelplatz from 2022 to 2024.
The Alexanderplatz Christmas market is known for its ice skating rink, fairground rides, and ferris wheel. You can visit anytime between November 21st to December 26th, 2022. A special feature is the Christmas pyramid, the biggest walk-in pyramid in Europe. It’s decorated with more than 5000 lights and has a platform that offers panoramic views of the city. It’s also near the Nikolai Historic Quarter and Berliner Dom Cathedral, which means you can make a day trip out of it.
There are many more Christmas markets to choose from, depending on where you live and what sounds best to you. If you’re a tenant in one of our co living Berlin apartments, check out this list of open Christmas markets in Berlin to see which is nearest to you.
The traditional Christmas market in Warsaw offers beautiful memories, warm season foods, and unique handmade souvenirs. The Rynek Christmas Market, otherwise known as the Outdoor Christmas Market in the Old Town, is located opposite the Royal Castle and is open every day between November 25th to January 6th, 2023. Listen to Christmas carols and go shopping for handmade items from the stands, from hand-decorated baubles to woollen sweaters. Enjoy traditional Polish food like pierogis, fried fish, rich soups, and grilled meat, plus Christmas classics like mulled wine or hot chocolate that will warm you up in the cold weather. Finally, gaze at the sight of the Christmas tree, decorated with thousands of lights. This marks the true beginning of the season - so take it all in!
Dubai’s Christmas scene might surprise you with its unique sense of fun. These aren’t your regular everyday markets!
The first on our list is Madinat Jumeirah’s Festive Market, which features such highlights as a North Pole train, Venetian carousel, and bungee jumping. It also features fantastic food and drinks for the whole family. Open from December 15 - December 30, 2022, you don’t have a lot of time to explore this festive market - so grab the chance while you can!
We are also intrigued by Winterfest by McGettigan’s, a brand new Christmas market opening in Dubai this year. This Irish pub will be going all out with market stalls and fun activities for kids, including a Santa’s grotto and snowball fights. Located at the Dubai Media City amphitheatre, this market will be open between November 20 - December 24, 2022.
