Celebrating International Museum Day with a new spot on London’s Museum Map
Celebrating International Museum Day in London
Inspired by the changes the world has experienced in the last year and urging people to reimagine the museums of the future, this year's International Museum Day theme is 'The Future of Museums: Recover and Imagine'.
And what can be more focused on the future of museums than a new, reinvented “Museum of London”, which will be relocated to West Smithfield and renamed “The London Museum”. Said to be “the only museum to tell the story of the world's greatest city and its people.”, The London Museum promises to be a world-class culture offering with people and inclusivity at its heart.
The plan is for the new museum to occupy market buildings in West Smithfield that have stood empty and derelict for over three decades – saving the historic General Market site for generations to come. Excitingly this new location is just one short bus ride away from one of Vonder’s co living London apartments - Wimpole Street.
The museum’s current site at London Wall in the City of London will close at the end of this year, 2022.
Sharon Ament, Director of Museum of London, said: “London has been slap-bang in the middle of it all – of culture, of trade and of ideas – for hundreds of years and so it feels right that we’re relocating the Museum of London to Smithfield Market – in the historic heart of the capital. This will be more than a museum, it will tell the story of all Londoners – past, present and future; it will be a new civic space for millions of visitors to enjoy, 24 hours a day, and it will be a living, breathing building that buzzes with the energy of Londoners. It will bring a new economy and foster a new relationship between people and the place in which they live, work or are visiting.
The countdown starts now. This summer, we’ll be celebrating 45 years at our London Wall site, honouring our great past at the centre of London life before looking forward to being reborn as The London Museum.”
Overall International Museum Day, falling on May 18th this year, is an annual celebration of the role of museums in our society and aims to engage the public with lots of interesting and creative activities. Museums teach us about our past and open our minds to new ideas. The focus behind this day is to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in our communities. So get out there and visit a museum in your community this International Museum Day!
