Flying Flags on Oxford Street in Support of Renewable Energy
Flags on Oxford Street for Renewable Energy - Vonder
A strong environmental message is being spread down Oxford Street in Morag Myerscough’s signature radiant and bold design
For the Clean Power campaign, which aims to encourage conversation about renewable energy, British artist Morag Myerscough has created an exhibition of 105 bright coloured flags. Stretching from Tottenham Court Road to Marble Arch, the flags span the length of Oxford Street in London. The flags, which have been created using recycled marine plastics, feature bold letters spelling “Time for Clean Power”.
“It felt really important to make energy a positive thing because, at the moment, it’s really negative. Renewables are positive – it’s the future, and we want people to connect with that.” Myerscough was quoted as saying.
This is the first time Oxford Street is flying flags that have been curated by an artist, and the first time they’ve been used to spread an environmental message. And each day it’s becoming more of an important message to spread. Many of us have seen the cost of living skyrocket, with one of the biggest factors being higher energy bills. The message is clear, switching to renewable energy will reduce our energy bills.
Along with the flags, which sits under the Clean Power campaign running as part of the #TogetherBand climate movement, projects focused on generating solar energy in central London, as well as the planting of a new London woodland of native trees to help sequester carbon, purify the air, and bring a positive impact to Londoners’ wellbeing, are included. There are also products for sale, the proceeds of which will go towards supporting London-based eco projects.
You have the next 4 weeks to head down to Oxford Street to take in the site and inspiration of the Clean Power flags. After that they will embark on a world tour to countries including Japan, the US, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.
“You can get a strong emotional response straight away by looking up at the flags and thinking, what does this mean and what can I do?” said Oliver Wayman, founder of the Clean Power campaign.
The main message being taken away from all of this is that the future is in our hands. Together we can make more sustainable choices and help to repair and renew the planet. Benefitting us now and in the future.
“With this work I wanted to put out an optimistic approach towards our future, if we work together we can help make the changes we need to happen. The oranges, greens and blues represent the sun, sea and air that we need to power ourselves to a renewable future.” said Myerscough.
