diversity

Why is London one of the most diverse cities in the world?

All in one living in London is more attractive than ever as new statistics about the city’s diversity come out

Where once you might not have met people beyond those in your neighbourhood, today’s world is different. Our world is becoming more global than ever before. Because of this, it’s important to meet people who are different from you and experience as much as possible in order to gain a fresh and more balanced view of the world. That means that diversity is becoming more crucial than it ever has been.

But looking for the perfect city to live in, one where you’ll meet all kinds of people and be exposed to new ideas, is often much easier said than done. Although major cities are growing at incredible rates, this doesn’t always mean that these same cities are as diverse as you might be looking for.

One city in particular, however, stands out in this metric. In an annual Time Out Index of urban living around the world, 88 percent of Londoners described their city as diverse. This makes complete sense no matter how you look at it. When you visit London, you immediately notice the mixture of languages and the people who come from all over the world to stay. In this same Time Out index, 84 percent of London locals said that it was “easy to express who you are” in their city. This is probably why there’s such strong diversity and inclusivity; being free to express who you are means you’ll meet others who also feel the same way and are able to connect with you authentically from a deep-rooted sense of who they are. For all these reasons and more, London deserves its spot as one of the most diverse cities in the world.

The news gets even better. You’re sure to find not just a diversity of people but a diversity of experience. This is invaluable to becoming a more worldly and knowledgeable person. You might be surprised by how much London truly has to offer. Your experience there will not be summed up only by Big Ben and Buckingham palace. There’s so much more to see and do. In fact, 88 percent of respondents on the Time Out Index said that it was easy to “discover new and surprising things” in London, which means that you’ll never run out of creative ways to explore the city. Whether you attend an upcoming festival, discover a hidden gem, or find a local event to take part in, there is always something different to do. And if you want to find someplace new to eat or drink, 87 percent of Londoners rated their city highly for “eating and drinking,” too. So drink up and enjoy the sights!
