Why You Should Move to Munich
Why You Should Move to Munich - by Vonder
Not for nothing was Munich named the most liveable city in the world in Monocle’s Quality of Life Survey.
As a city that provides effective public services and is home to happy residents, it fits the criteria. Munich is clean, safe, and close to the Alps (perfect for skiing fans). According to Forbes, the city’s unemployment rate is as low as four percent, and it is home to global titans in the biotech, engineering, and automotive industries.
Munich is also called “the village with a million inhabitants” because its cobblestone alleys in the old town and small shops contribute to a cosy and intimate atmosphere. Although Munich is the 3rd largest city in Germany, it often feels small to visitors from megacities. This means that you get all the benefits of city life while still having the space to explore and breathe.
There are so many reasons why you should move to Munich, but here are a few:
Public Parks and Gardens
Munich will satisfy the nature lover in you. Green spaces and parks take up about 20% of the total area of the city, which means that you are never far away from greenery. Explore the famous Englischer Garten (English Garden), which is larger than Central Park in New York at 910 acres. The expansive 18th-century garden includes sites such as the Bavarian National Museum, the Eisbachwelle (a wave created by the Eisbach river where crowds gather to watch experienced surfers), and the Chinesischen Turm (Chinese Tower), a 25-metre-tall pagoda where you can stop for snacks and drinks.
If you prefer a smaller garden, the Alter Botanischer Garten is the place to go. It is the perfect spot to picnic with friends or just read a good book outdoors. Best of all, its café has a beer garden which permits visitors to bring their own food with them. Another standout option is the Hofgarten (Court Garden), a city park with formal lawns and flower beds that once was the governmental seat of the Bavarian royal residence in the 17th century.
Recreation
Munich has something for everyone, from fantastic nightlife to cultural monuments and events. You will never get bored here because there are so many things to do and places to see. Some of the more well-known areas include the Nymphenburg Palace, the Viktualienmarkt, and impressive churches. The Nymphenburg Palace constitutes one of the premier royal palaces of Europe; its frontal width of 632m even surpasses Versailles Palace. The Viktualienmarkt is a farmers market that covers 22,000 sqm and includes a butchers’ hall, bakery, and flower market.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Oktoberfest, an annual 16-18 day festival that brings in more than six million visitors from around the world.
Convenient Transportation
There is no need for a car in Munich; the public transportation system is unlike any other in terms of cleanliness, organisation, scheduling, and reliable timing. Subways, buses, and trams will take you to any corner of the city (and beyond it). Riding your bike or driving in Munich is simple, with well-marked streets and an extensive network of bicycle paths. If you like to walk, Munich has pedestrian zones in the major shopping centres and sidewalks along every street. This accessibility means that you can travel comfortably at any time without worrying.
Cultural Diversity
The most recent European Commission’s Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor assessed 190 cities from over 30 countries across Europe. The final ranking placed Munich in 2nd place based on cultural diversity, creative industries, and a supportive environment.
This isn’t surprising when you get to know the city better. Cultural diversity was judged based on nine factors that included museums, theatre, tourist overnight stays, and satisfaction with the cultural institutions. Munich has numerous exhibits, institutions such as the Residenztheater, and excellent accommodations for tourists. It has approximately 65 museums, including the biggest technology museum in the world (The Deutsches Museum, containing over 17,000 artefacts). People from all over the world visit and live in Munich, which gives the city a unique international flair. About 25% of Munich’s population is of foreign origin.
