The Best Things to Do in Shoreditch: A Local's Guide

The real Shoreditch, from Brick Lane to the backstreets.

If you haven't spent time in Shoreditch yet, you’re missing out. East London's most creative neighbourhood is one of those rare places that genuinely delivers on its reputation, buzzing markets, world-class street art, brilliant food, and a nightlife scene that somehow feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard. Whether you're moving to the area or just exploring, here's your guide to making the most of it.

1. Lose Yourself on Brick Lane

No introduction needed. Brick Lane is Shoreditch's heartbeat — a street that somehow holds centuries of history, the city's best curry houses, vintage rails stuffed with 90s throwbacks, and rotating street art all at once. On Sundays, the market takes over: food stalls, vinyl, handmade jewellery, antiques, and that unmistakable East London buzz. Go hungry. Stay longer than you planned.

2. Follow the Street Art

Shoreditch is one of the most celebrated open-air galleries in the world. Artists from across the globe, including the elusive Banksy, have left their mark on its walls. Head to Rivington Street, Shoreditch High Street, and the backstreets around Brick Lane for ever-changing murals and installations. The Global Street Art collective recently transformed an entire building on New Inn Broadway with a stunning Romeo and Juliet-inspired mural, a nod to the area's Elizabethan theatre roots.

A guided street art tour is a great way to get the stories behind the work. Or just wander. There's always something new.

3. Browse the Markets

Beyond Brick Lane, Shoreditch punches well above its weight for markets. Old Spitalfields Market (open daily) is a beautifully covered Victorian space with independent designers, artisan food, and one-of-a-kind gifts worth visiting on a Thursday for antiques or Friday for fashion. Columbia Road Flower Market on Sunday mornings is a genuine sensory experience: stalls overflowing with blooms, vendors calling out deals, and a stretch of indie cafés and galleries lining the road. Truman Brewery hosts an ever-changing programme of markets, exhibitions, and events throughout the week. BOXPARK, built from repurposed shipping containers, is great for a relaxed lunch or an evening out with a drink in hand.

4. Eat and Drink Well

The food scene here is seriously impressive. Dishoom is a London institution for a reason. Indian-Iranian fusion dishes with atmosphere to match. Gloria does Italian food in the most indulgent, flamboyant way possible. For something more low-key, the 24/7 Beigel Bake on Brick Lane has been feeding the neighbourhood since 1974 and remains one of the city's great unsung pleasures.

For coffee, Shoreditch Grind (by Old Street station) and Ozone Coffee Roasters are both excellent. And when evening hits, the bar options range from speakeasies to rooftop terraces to cocktail bars run by some of the world's best mixologists.

5. Play Something

Shoreditch has a handful of activity bars that genuinely work — not gimmicky, just fun. Flight Club (darts, cocktails, steampunk interiors) and Shuffle Club (shuffleboard in a converted warehouse with pizzas on the side) are both brilliant options for a group evening. Junkyard Golf adds nostalgia and cocktails to mini golf. For something more cultural, Rich Mix on Bethnal Green Road hosts film, live music, and art in a neighbourhood arts centre that punches above its weight.

6. Get a Bit of Green

It's easy to forget Shoreditch has green space, but it does. Haggerston Park is large, well-loved, and offers everything from basketball courts to a BMX track and a wisteria-covered pergola. Allen Gardens near Brick Lane features street art installations amid urban greenery and is a great spot to decompress between markets.
